The Number 47 and Walmart

Yes, I see the number 47 all the time. If fact, it's in my phone number. I was born in '74 and my dad was born in '47 (on Sept. 11).

Maybe everyone here is right and there is some deeper meaning to seeing that number everywhere, but I have a couple of other possible theories.

First, the number 47 is the most angular combination of numbers (all other numbers besides 1 have curves). So, this number combination tends to stand out to the eye - which might explain why Walmart uses that number in a LOT of their pricing (e.g., things cost $47, or $1.47, or $.47 frequently).

Second, there is a part of the brain called the Reticular Activating System that filters meaningless information from that which is important. So, as you read this, your brain is ignoring everything around you (until you shift back to it...after becoming aware that this is happening).

So, if we all assign value to the number 47, we tend to see it more than other numbers because our brains believe it to be significant. It's like if you bought a new Toyota Prius and suddenly starting seeing Priuses everywhere. Previously, you may have seen many Priuses everywhere, but your brain just blocked them out until they became meaningful for you (then you saw them EVERYWHERE).

Finally, I think this number gets assigned meaning when the person who sees it is at the beginning or in the middle of some kind of spiritual journey. That is, when you start contemplating the infinite vastness of the unseen world, you start looking for meaning wherever it can be found.

So, maybe it means something or maybe it just stands out to those who are "looking deeper."

Either way, with what science is now learning about the quantum nature of matter and energy, anything is possible.

I guess we'll know when 47 tall white aliens from the Pleiades land on earth and say this:

"Hey guys, whether you're scientific, religious, or spiritual, you're all right if your intentions are pure. Now, stop arguing and just love each other already. Life is better that way..."
